Lunz, Austria / September 19

Instead of going somewhere far away and exotic after hiking to Mariazell, I chose to stay back in Gaming for a nice quiet weekend... filled with studying for an early midterm. So I recovered from the hike and went to Lunz for a day trip.

We may or may not have been slightly confused at where exactly the bus stop was....

Mariazell Hike (aka the worst day of my life) / September 18

So the school does this pro-life hike thing to Mariazell each semester... sounds cool until you realize that it is actually something like an 18 mile hike. Then it slowly and painfully turns into the worst day of you life.

While hiking, Marissa and I pulled ahead and left the group. We propelled ourselves onward with thoughts of running water, beds, hot tea with honey, and sleep. We eventually past Mr. Wolters: ex-marine. We felt pretty amazing at that point for passing him (even though he was being slowed down by his three year old son). We continued on and began to conjure up numerous ways of how to get to Mariazell by any other means besides walking... stealing and hot-wiring a tractor was definitely one of our ideas.

After the hike that took us around six hours to finish, we had mass in the church then headed back on the bus to Gaming. Needless to say, many if not all were asleep. That night I felt like a 300 year old lady... I could barely climb the three flights of stairs to my room. And getting out of bed the next day was excruciating.

Hobbling, lots of hobbling happened the following three days. Thankfully we had the presence of mind to do lots of stretching in the mornings and before bed.

Vienna / September 5

After our first night in a hostel, we woke up early so that we could explore the area around the church we would be having mass at (right).

Pictures can't even do justice to the beautiful city of Vienna. This school trip was an overnight excursion, meaning we would have two full days of seeing the city.

Salzburg / August 29

The next school outing was to Salzburg! After having watched the Sound of Music the night before, we were all ready to go see the beautiful city.

Kartause Barbecue / August 28

The Austrian staff gave us a huge feast! There were literally over five meat options and many more options for the sides. Of course, we all ate at least three servings of meat.

After eating, we played volleyball and came back outside the kartause in time to watch the Sound of Music and eat milka.

Melk (not milk) / August 22

After Durnstein, we headed to Melk where we ate and had a tour of the abbey.

Durnstein (dern-sh-tine) / August 22

For the first school outing, they took us to nearby Durnstein. At Durnstein, we all climbed the hill (more like a mountain) to the castle at the top. This castle is supposedly where King Richard III, the Lion Heart was held captive.

View from the castle. The river in these pictures is the Danube. We saw some of the Viking River Cruise ships on the Danube.

The blue bell tower is the church were we had mass.
